The Spring Symposium Series is an annual set of meetings run in parallel at a common site. It is designed to bring colleagues together in an intimate forum while at the same time providing a significant gathering point for the AI community. The two-and-a-half-day format of the series allows participants to devote considerably more time to feedback and discussion than typical one-day workshops. It is an ideal venue for bringing together new communities in emerging fields.

Symposia generally range from 40–75 participants each. Participation was open to active participants as well as other interested individuals on a first-come, first-served basis. By improving access to health services, reducing costs, and addressing workforce shortages, AI can play a pivotal role in tackling global health challenges. However, successfully integrating AI into healthcare requires careful consideration of regulatory frameworks, governance structures, data equity, and privacy protections. This symposium will bring together AI researchers, clinicians, and industry experts to foster meaningful dialogues and insights that contribute to responsible AI development.

Traditional AI models in healthcare often rely on limited, isolated datasets, facing challenges like missing values, data imbalance, and insufficient representation of diverse patient populations. These issues can lead to algorithmic biases, diminished generalizability, and reduced accuracy of AI-driven predictions, especially in clinical settings. Ensuring access to large, high-quality datasets is key to addressing these limitations, yet privacy and security constraints often restrict data sharing and collaboration across institutions.

This symposium aims to explore current challenges and forward-looking solutions to enhance AI’s reliability, inclusivity, and ethical impact in healthcare. We should also address concerns about risk, trust, and safety that arise in collaborative settings.

This symposium will focus on varieties of human-AI collaboration that occur in task-oriented interactions. This includes team settings in which: a human oversees AI agents; an AI agent advises a person on complex
tasks; humans and AI agents cooperate as equals; an AI system coordinates humans and agents; and human and AI agents handle subtasks usually done by one person. These differ in roles, responsibilities, and interactions in ways that cut across different AI paradigms.

Presentations will discuss application domains that can benefit from collaborative AI, implemented systems that participate in human-AI teams, and remaining challenges. Rather than focusing on details of AI systems, submissions and presentations should discuss the:

Problem domain and overall objective of human-AI collaboration;

Human and AI team members, including abilities and expertise;

Roles and responsibilities of team members for component tasks;

Objectives, expectations, and interactions among team members;

Incorporation of features like transparency, trust, and dependability;

Tradeoffs between risks and benefits in the collaboration; and

Measures of task performance for both the overall team and members.

Addressing these issues will make talks more accessible to participants with different backgrounds, encourage discussion of general principles for human-AI teaming, and forge a stronger research community.

Submissions and Dates

Authors should submit extended abstracts of proposed talks through the AAAI Spring Symposium EasyChair site: https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=sss25

Submissions should be one to two pages, including figures and references, using 11-point font in any pdf format. By leveraging the autonomous capabilities of Agentic AI, scientists can revolutionize hypothesis generation, comprehension, quantification, and validation. This symposium explores the challenges and opportunities of applying Agentic AI systems to accelerate scientific progress across disciplines.

Traditional AI applications in science have primarily focused on isolated tasks, often requiring significant human intervention for contextual understanding and execution. In contrast, Agentic AI systems, powered by advanced large language models (LLMs) offer the potential for greater autonomy, interpretability, and interactivity. These systems can independently design experiments, propose hypotheses, and interact with researchers to refine insights, enabling a systematic and holistic approach to scientific discovery.

Despite its promise, deploying Agentic AI in science faces significant challenges. For instance, the novelty of hypotheses generated by these systems is often limited by training data, and the complexity of real-world phenomena remains challenging to model accurately. Verification and reproducibility of AI-driven discoveries also present hurdles that demand rigorous theoretical and practical frameworks. Furthermore, the ethical implications of AI decision-making in science, including fairness, transparency, and accountability, must be carefully addressed.

This symposium provides a collaborative platform for researchers, practitioners, and policymakers to address these issues. Through keynote talks, panel discussions, and interactive sessions, participants will explore how Agentic AI can redefine scientific discovery, from hypothesis generation, comprehension, and quantification to robust validation. Key outcomes will include identifying gaps in current research, fostering interdisciplinary collaborations, and setting an agenda for the future development of responsible and impactful Agentic AI systems.

Topics

Design and development of agentic AI systems for scientific discovery

Theoretical foundation for scientific agentic AI

Practical application of scientific agentic AI

Open problems and challenges on scientific agentic AI

Format of Symposium

The symposium will be structured as a two-and-a-half-day event, featuring:

Six keynote talks by leading experts in Agentic AI and scientific research

Technical presentations and invited talks covering cutting-edge advancements

Interactive workshops on practical implementation and challenges

Breakout sessions for brainstorming solutions to open problems

Panel discussions addressing future directions and interdisciplinary opportunities

Important Deadlines

All deadlines are 11:59pm Anywhere on Eath (AoE)

Paper submission deadline: February 1, 2025

Acceptance notification: February 10, 2025

Camera ready deadline: February 17, 2025

Symposium dates: March 31-April 2, 2025

Submission Requirements

We accept both full papers and position or short papers.
